Sturt National Park

Our first land acquisition

  • YEAR: 2019
  • STATE: New South Wales
  • FOCUS AREAS: Growing Parks/SDG 15: Life on Land

In July 1970 FNPW, then known as the New South Wales Parks & Wildlife Foundation, announced its first major project.

The financing of acquisition of land for a National Park in the far north-west corner of New South Wales. Details of the proposal were made known by the Chairman of the Foundation (Mr. F.S. Buckley). The Foundation provided $50,000 for the purchase by the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation of Mount King Station, which comprises 83,500 acres of what is now Sturt National Park

FNPW support

This project was funded through generous donations from FNPW supporters across Australia and beyond.

Project overview

The FNPW’s Land Acquisition Program provides a living legacy by transferring privately owned land with high conservation values into public ownership for ongoing management. In its 50+ year history the FNPW has acquired over half a million hectares of land for the national reserve system. These acquisitions are the result of direct bequest, land donation or purchase from fundraising efforts.

The FNPW’s Land Acquisition Program conserves land in between our parks and reserves to ensure adequate connectivity across the landscape. Private properties with high conservation land and agreements create these connections. In 2012 FNPW expanded this program to reach even more private conservationists to see more than 70 properties across New South Wales benefit from the program. This program started in 2008 as a partnership with the Paddy Pallin Foundation, Diversicon Environmental Foundation, Wildlife Land Trust, NSW Nature Conservation Trust and the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage’s Conservation Partners Program.

In 2010 FNPW was entrusted with over $5 million to purchase Heritage Estates on the south coast of New South Wales. Heritage Estates is 180 hectare paper subdivision of 1,200 lots. The rural zoning, which has been in place since 1964, prevents the lots from being developed. In conjunction with partners NSW NPWS and the Australian Government, FNPW purchased over 530 lots within Heritage Estates for inclusion into Jervis Bay National Park for permanent protection.

LAND DONATIONS

A land donation is one of the greatest gifts you can give to support Australian conservation. Your land could become part of a national park and as a lasting legacy for generations to come.
