Brush Turkey visits Sydney Backyards

Early this summer I was sitting having my breakfast when I noticed my cat taking an interest in something in the garden. I looked up and thought I was dreaming; it was a Brush Turkey. The previous Saturday night I had gone on a Night Owls Spotlight Tour around Cremorne Point where I learned that Brush Turkeys were becoming more prevalent in urban areas, however, I don't think they meant downtown Cremorne in suburban Sydney!

About mid-morning it roosted in my avocado tree for a couple of hours before being chased away by some Currawongs. It then hopped over the neighbours’ fence and spent some time in her avocado tree, on her fence and scrubbing in her garden until the Currawongs chased it away again.

Later in the evening it made its way into another garden. I heard reports that it had held up the traffic in Parraween Street at 5pm while it made a leisurely crossing, before it left the neighbourhood the next morning.
